Escape into nature at Knuckles Forest Lodge & Camp Site, a peaceful and rustic nature retreat located in Illukkumbura, Matale District, in the heart of the Knuckles Mountain Range. Designed especially for nature lovers, hikers, families, small groups and travellers looking for an authentic back-to-nature experience, the lodge offers a simple and environmentally conscious way to experience the beauty of the Knuckles landscape. This is not a conventional hotel. The lodge is intentionally designed with minimal infrastructure, natural materials and a simple village-style atmosphere, allowing guests to slow down, reconnect with nature and enjoy the tranquillity of the surrounding mountains.

About the Lodge

The lodge is a traditionally inspired mud-and-clay structure, constructed
using environmentally friendly and reusable materials including mud, clay,
timber and selected GI/iron supports.

The floors and walls are primarily made from natural mud and clay, with
traditionally finished surfaces. The simple construction creates a warm,
rustic atmosphere and reflects the traditional character of rural Sri Lankan homes.

The entire property operates on renewable solar energy. Gentle 12V lighting
is available throughout the day and evening, providing enough light for comfort
while allowing guests to experience the natural darkness of the forest.

After sunset, the surroundings become particularly special — guests may enjoy
stargazing, watching fireflies and observing nocturnal activity around the property.

At present, Knuckles Forest Lodge operates as one simple lodge with
accommodation for approximately 10–12 guests.

Elevated Timber Deck

An adjoining elevated timber deck/platform provides additional sleeping
space for up to approximately 6 guests, using mattresses.

The lodge is therefore particularly suitable for small groups, families,
friends, nature camps and travellers who enjoy simple communal accommodation.

10 metres from the accommodation rooms.

Guests should note that the bathroom facilities are basic and rustic,
in keeping with the nature of the property.

Water Supply

Safe drinking water is supplied separately to guests. The main water source
is a natural mountain spring located above the property, with water transferred
to the lodge through a gravity-fed system.

Meals & Local Hospitality

One of our experienced local associates will look after guests during their
stay, providing a genuine personal and village-style experience.

Traditional home-style Sri Lankan meals can be prepared according to the
selected meal plan and prior arrangements.

Guests can enjoy simple, freshly prepared food while experiencing the warmth
and hospitality of the local community.
